Walking

One of the main things to do on Iráklia is walking. Start with buying a map, for example in Mini market Melissa, close to the port. You can do a few different walks. Well, the strong and good equipped can walk almost anywhere in the landscape. Anyway, I shortly describes a few walks here:

  • Agios Georgios - Panaghia (Chora)

With this walk you have two options:

  1. Walk the main street out of Agios Georgios passing most of the accommodations, and then follow the new road passing Livadi beach and then towards Panaghia.
  2. Take the rightmost street out of Agios Georgios, passing the church and then follow the old path to the south, with windmills at your left-hand. At the fork by the last windmill, take left and at next fork left again to reach the new road. Follow the new road to Panaghia.

These two walks take about 40-60 minutes. I recommend the second one, since its more rewarding walking closer to the nature.

  • Panaghia - Agios Ioannis cave

For a brief description how to reach the cave, see article Agios Ioannis cave. It's a 60-90 minutes walk. This walk offer fantastic view over the Iraklia landscape.

  • Agios Georgios - Spilia beach

If you don't bother too much about my warnings regarding Spilia beach, see article Beaches, you can do this walk. It's just about 35-45 minutes and you pass the church in Agios Georigios and follow the old track and then in the first fork (I think) take to the right. When I did the walk I missed this fork and had to pass a field to reach the right path! Anyway, continue on this path that runs rather close to the sea and soon you reach Spilia beach.

  • Agios Georgios - Agios Athanassis - path towards cave

An alternative route to the cave is this one. You take the rightmost street out of Agios Georgios passing the church, then following the mule track south with the wind mills to the left. At the fork in line with the last windmill, take right and at next fork right again. After 40 - 60 minutes you reach Agios Athanassis with a few buildings. Continue the track south and after another 30-45 minute the track reaches a fork which of the path from the left (east) comes from Panaghia and the path heading right (west) is towards Agios Ioannis cave. From here it is about 60 minutes to the cave, or 30 minutes to Panaghia village.
