The small islands between Náxos and Amorgós, Iráklia, Schinoússa, Konfoníssi and Donoússa also known as The Small Cyclades, have always fascinated travellers that look for peace and relaxation. As a part of that category of travellers I already in 1997 visited three of the above islands but not Iráklia. So during planning for summer 2000 Iráklia was on my mind.

Walking

One of the main things to do on Iráklia is walking. Start with buying a map, for example in Mini market Melissa, close to the port. You can do a few different walks. Well, the strong and good equipped can walk almost anywhere in the landscape. Anyway, I shortly describes a few walks here:

Agios Ioannis cave

The Agios Ioannis cave is considered to be the main attraction of Iráklia. It is believed to be one of the most beautiful caves in the Cyklades! My mistake was not to bring a strong torch to be able to do a somewhat thorough investigation of the cave. Anyway, I saw some stalactites and the so called cave milk so I'm quite content.

Favourite taverns

On the main street of Agios Georgios a nice tavern is situated: Ο ΠΕΥΚΟΣ - Pegos. The outdoor section is beneath a huge tree that offers shadow. The food is splendid and here I had the best mousaka so far (This was year 2000. Unfortunately I had tried many, uninspiring mousakas). The tavern is pretty frequented also outside the main season, and I believe that the good reputation of the delicious food is wide spread!

There are a few other restaurants with good food. Find out for yourself!

Beaches

When it comes to beaches I would not recommend Iráklia in The Small Cyclades. Probably Akti Poriou on Konfoníssi is my number one followed by Livadi or Kendros on Donoússa.
