On many developed and overcrowded islands you find a lot of stuff to buy in gift shops. The items don’t seem to vary that much compared to other destinations in Europe or even Bali in Indonesia. But on Tilos there are a few shops with, what I would like to call, quality items.
I didn't spend that much time in looking for shops, but during evening time after or before dinner, is fun to visit shops. I actually bought a few things, among others: one watercolour and one print.
I want to mention two shops that have nice objects of different kind. The common with these two shops is that the owners/staff all comes from the UK. Furthermore they are friendly and service minded in both of these shops!
The Gallery
When you enter this shop you immediately feel the intense and lovely smell of soap. They actually produce and sell their own natural soap. Other beautiful things in this shop/gallery are many different items of glass. This place is own/run by the artist couple Ray and Susan Ward. Besides producing the above items and more, Susan takes wonderful photographs of the island that is for sale and Ray do paintings of different kinds and material. Summer 2004 there were several fine water colours to choose from, among other things.
If you are into walking, you can have interesting conversation and get much advice in this shop. You find the gallery on the main street where it turns inland (right) not far from the harbour.
ΚΟΣΜΟΣ - Kosmos Gift Shop
This shop, situated opposite the bakery, is run by Helen and Paul from Manchester. Here you find quality items all made in Greece, such as ceramics, designer stationary, bags, hats, sandals, sarongs and t-shirts. You can also find art, such as paintings or cheaper prints if you can't afford the original. Furthermore they have internet and e-mail facilities
Beside all this Helen and Paul are a great source of information about Tilos, and they probably could assist in most matters concerning Tilos and your stay there!
