What to do

I don't think you should visit an island like Folégandros, with the attitude of having to do a lot of things. For me the main thing is to relax and enjoy the atmosphere of the island.

Perhaps by reading a good book in the shadow of a tamarisk, and later letting the crystal clear water caress your body. In the evening having a delicious meal with tasteful local wine, watching people passing by.

But if you still want to do a little more then usually, Folégandros has actually something to provide. The Cycladic School offers courses in drawing, painting, Greek cookery, folk dancing and more. This school is run by the Greek- Danish couple Fotis and Anne Papadopulos, with the help of external teachers from different countries.

I know a lady from my home town Jönköping, who attended a two-week class in painting, during the summer of 1995. She was very pleased with the course and her stay at Folégandros. If you think this could be something in your taste, follow the link above!

After having a dinner on a restaurant I recommend you a visit at a vine bar called To Kellari were you can enjoy Greek quality wine and music in a traditional and calm atmosphere.

A nice way of getting to know the island is to attend a boat trip around the island. These trips take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and starts down at the port in the mornings. The boat makes a lot of stops at nice beaches, and some cave and lunch is included. If you want more information you can call Sottovento Tourism Office, telephone number: +3022860-41444 or Diaplous General Tourism Office, telephone number: +3022860-41158.

Another thing I most highly recommend is to do some trekking on the island! This is maybe the best way of getting to know an island and its landscape. There are some nice paths where you can walk, for example from Chora, just behind the bakery and about 50 minutes later you can be at Fira or Angali beach, if you choose the right paths, that is! The book "Walking the Aegean Islands" by Dieter Graf, ISBN 3-9803130-5-0 is recommended reading. You can buy the book online on several places. Use Google to look for a Web shop to buy the book!
